CBD AND ME

I’ve been using CBD products to deal with a lot of stress (physical and mental) through the past couple months. “Full Spectrum CBD is created through full plant extraction. It contains all of the hemp-derived cannabinoids, including the trace amount of 0.3% THC, and all plant terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals, and plant proteins. These all work together synergistically to provide optimum benefit.

Broad Spectrum CBD is created by taking the full spectrum CBD and extracting all of the THC. This allows you to have the benefit of the whole plant CBD oil without the THC.

Isolate CBD is created by removing all molecules (compounds) from the full spectrum extract except the CBD. All that remains is a crystal or white powder ‘Pure”
CBD. Isolate does not provide the same benefits as the whole plant spectrum of CBD oil.”

“Your metabolism and other aspects of your body profile along with the method of delivery of the CBD will determine how long until you feel the effects.

When you take CBD tincture under your tongue, it absorbs quickly into the bloodstream because it bypasses the digestive system. Typically, you will feel the effects in as short as 15 minutes.

Other delivery methods, such as capsules and gummies can take longer; however, when ingesting CBD it has been shown to often work faster if you have eaten a very small amount of light food. These methods can take up to 30 minutes or an hour.”

“Starting with small doses of CBD and slowly increasing it, if necessary, is the best way to start. Typically we recommend between 10 to 30 mg of Elemental CBD to start. Everyone’s body and response is different, therefore start slow and see how it goes!”

“CBD is non-intoxicating or non-psychoactive. Elemental CBD products are also broad-spectrum with zero THC, which means that you won’t get high!”

“Although CBD products are great for helping you sleep, it does not necessarily make you sleepy.

It does have a relaxing and calming effect and when taken in a very small dose about a half hour before going to sleep, it has been shown to help with regulating the sleep cycle in both the short and long term.”

“Endocannabinoid System 101

The key to understanding the way cannabinoids, like CBD, interact in the human body requires a quick Endocanabinoid System 101 course! Actually, the entire discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) was due to the research on the cannabis plant. The ECS was actually unknown until in the 1990’s research revealed that the human body produced it’s own cannabinoids called endogenous cannabinoids or endocannibinoids. This was the beginning of identifying this vast biological regulatory system that is present throughout human and mammalian bodies.

The Role of Receptors and The Enocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid compounds, produced by the body, activate receptors found on the surface of cells in the brain, organs, tissues, glands, muscle and skeletal systems and the immune system.  The ECS performs various and unique roles, depending on the location in the body: however, the overall and ultimate goal of the ECS is to bring the body to balance, or homeostasis, regardless of environmental and external disturbances.

Cannabinoids come from two sources: either naturally produced by the body (endocannabinoids) or from the cannabis sativa and hemp plants (phytocannabinoids). The many benefits of the phytocannabinoid CBD, for instance, are a direct result of this receptor stimulation and interactions throughout the ECS.

CBD, The Endocannabinoid System and Receptors In The Brain

As an example, let’s look at the serotonin receptor known as 5-HT1A found in various areas of the brain. It is densely present in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and amygdale, all heavily involved in mood, anxiety and depression disorders. When a high concentration of CBD oil is ingested it activates the 5-HT1A receptor and produces an inhibitory response so that the receptor does not slow down or stop the serotonin production. In this way, CBD provides help with anxiety, mood, sleep and other areas of well being associated with the serotonin pathway.

The Endocannabinoid System, Phytocannabinoids and Optimum Health

Ongoing research into the endocannabinoid system and the role of phytocannabinoids demonstrates the essential role that broad spectrum CBD can provide. “Not all CBD oil is equal in quality and effectiveness. From seed to extract: the quality of hemp seed, the farming practices and the processing or extraction process determines the end quality and potency of the CBD Oil Extract. CBD rich hemp plants and organic farming practices are the first foundation of a quality product. Once the hemp is harvested, the next step is processing. Let’s take a look at how CBD oil is made, the various methods of extraction, what the differences in methods are and why it matters.

The Two Top Extraction Methods

Although there are several ways to extract oil from the hemp plant, using neurotoxic solvents like butane and hexane are the least desirable. They can possibly leave residue that compromises the effectiveness and safety of the extract. For this reason, quality CBD processing has two top extraction methods:

Supercritical CO2 Extraction: This extraction method is referred to as ‘supercritical’ because it references the point at which CO2 simultaneously has the properties of a gas and a liquid. By using highly specialized equipment, the CO2 is cooled below- 69 degrees F and put under high pressure (75 psi), which creates a supercritical state.

At this ‘critical’ point, a container/chamber containing the plant material is filled with this CO2 where the plant compounds (trichomes and terpenes) dissolve into the carbon dioxide. Then, the CO2 goes through a separator and CBD oil is what is left.

Although this extraction method requires expensive equipment, it has the advantage of being able to selectively extract specific compounds and allows for both purity of the cannabinoids and flavor.

Ethanol Extraction: The most typical way of using this process is to heat the plant material to achieve what is known as decarboxylation and then soaking the material in ethanol. After soaking for a period of time the liquid is filtered from the plant material. Then the liquid is left in the open and the ethanol is allowed to evaporate.

Because ethanol is a plant based solvent, many processors believe it maintains the natural chemical ratios of the plant. Although, there are pros and cons to this extraction method, it does produce a high volume of full spectrum hemp extract.

Proprietary Extraction Methods

Some quality CBD products like Elemental CBD Extract are processed through what is known as a proprietary process that produces Phytocannabinoid-Rich Hemp Oil by two separate processes.

The first process is supercritical CO2, which produces an extract that is rich in terpenes, cannabinoid (CBD) and other phytocannabinoids. Then this extract undergoes ‘winterization’ in ethanol, after which the solvent is removed through vacuum distillation. This removes the chlorophyll, waxes and THC. This results in what is known as a PCR (Phytocannabinoid Rich) hemp extract with 70-90% CBD, minor cannabinoids and terpenes.

This proprietary processing produces a PCR broad spectrum CBD extract that delivers the optimum benefits with zero THC content. This means you can have the full spectrum of benefits without the risk of THC. This is a great solution for children, pets and anyone that is subject to drug testing or has THC sensitivity.”

Basic Body Evaluation
The first part of finding your optimum personal dosage of CBD is to take a quick evaluation of your physical profile. This means:

There are many CBD products on the market and as with any products, some are higher quality than others. In addition, there is a big difference between extraction methods, such as, broad spectrum CBD and CBD isolate. Both have zero THC yet that is where the similarity ends.

CBD isolate is the complete extraction of the phytocannabinoid compound CBD (cannabidiol) from the hemp plant. It is extracted down to ‘pure CBD’. All other beneficial compounds of the hemp plant have been removed.

PCR or Phytocannabinoid Rich Broad Spectrum CBD oil is extracted leaving the complete spectrum of all of the beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, essential vitamins, fatty acids and fiber. However, all THC is removed, therefore you have the advantage of the full spectrum without the psychoactive component. This gives you the maximum benefit without the risk.

The Main Key To Dosing CBD
Most high quality PCR Broad Spectrum products have dosing recommendations. It will also depend on the concentration of CBD.
For instance if a one ounce bottle of tincture has 250 mg. of CBD, and the recommended dosage is 1-4 droppers, start with a small dosage of 1 dropper per day. However, the key to finding what works best for you is to start with a small dosage and slowly increase it until you reach a level that feels right.
